It is not easy to explain why Duke Nukem 3D was such success - it wasn’t first ever first-person shooter, it wasn’t first 3D FPS game, it wasn’t even the best looking game of the era, it had no story or proper introduction, but there was just one thing that put aside all of the weaker points and that was the gameplay.
The game starts in Los Angeles, where armed with gun and husky voice we are put in charge of stopping the alien invasion. Once we step out of the roof it is just roller coaster of level after level of enemy attacking you on every step, and simple puzzles stopping you from progressing or weird things that will happen to you. But the only thing you won’t complain about is boredom - you can find alternative routes via air ducts, you can stumble upon different alien forms, you can use CCTV to detect enemy ambushes, you can improve your arsenal and find the way to another level.
Duke Nukem 3D was huge success because of its simplicity and very enjoyable gameplay, not to mention a unique sense of humour. Sadly even the creators of original game could not understand what was behind the game popularity since it took them 12 years to come up with sequel that was unanimously panned for being one of the worst tripple-A games ever made. Duke Nukem Forever was stuck in development hell for years and years and the final result was just abysmal - it lacked the simplicity of original, the humour was on the heavy side and almost everything about the game was off-putting.
