Have you ever dreamed of becoming a shipowner? I know, not many people have. But here you can learn how tough this business can be.
What you need to become a shipowner? A ship would be my first guess, but if you dive deep into the Ports of Call, you will soon learn that what you really need is a metric ton of money. Buying a ship is not that much problem, but it needs to be repaired, refuelled, you need to constantly search for clients in need of goods transport, not to mention you need to pay the pilots to guide your ships in and out of the ports. Sounds like fun, right? And it actually might be.
Ports of Call is a German game and the single thing you need to know about German management games is that they are brutally hard, especially when it comes to money. And this title is no exception - you can quite easily buy a ship, it will not be in great condition, but it will do for the start. You just need to put the fuel inside, find a cargo that needs to be moved to another part of the world and you are set. Well, almost. There are random events that might cause damage to your vessels or lead to fines if you are late with the delivery.
To save some money you can skip the pilot services in ports, by steering the ship yourself. It might work out fine if the port layout is reasonably easy to navigate, but there are places, where it is really challenging to do it yourself. And, of course, if you fail your attempt, the ship will be damaged and you might be fined, so fun all around.
Ports of Call is a typical German game, where you manage a business, but it would remain typical if not for the option to steer the ships yourself. Apart of that mini-game the rest is typical - you send cargoes around the world and hope to keep you company afloat. And actually it is not bad.
