A city-builder from times that there were no city-builders yet - you start from an empty lot and build your metropolis.
Sim City was first game that shaped the city building genre, with its simple graphics and top-down view it did not look amazing, but the sheer freedom you had in approaching the development of your own city was amazing.
Of course, you start with an empty piece of land, you build the first road, the power plant, leave the lots to be filled with industrial, commercial or residential buildings and... you wait. First citizens of your newly established city will soon arrive, you need to provide them with place to build their houses, provide them with electricity, attract companies to establish their businesses in the area, so your people could find a job and place to buy groceries. And that is the basic idea behind Sim City, but then you have to provide security (in form of police force and fire department), health services, education, places like sport arena, etc. And all of this will produce a lot of traffic, so also you have to build infrastructure so people could drive to their jobs and back home.
There are also disasters that might drop by uninvited and make a mess out of your beautiful city, there are budgeting challenges (set taxes too high and the businesses will start to leave, set them too low and you will end up with empty bank account), there is pollution, there are social challenges. All of this take place on a randomly generated map, which means you can play over and over again and face completely different challenges and completely different scenarios.
Sim City was simple enough to be enjoyable, yet complicated enough to keep you occupied for hours and that is a mark of a great game.
