Back in the wild 1990s the game industry looked completely different - the games were distributed on discs and... that’s it. Oh well, not that completely different then, but Software Manager can show you how different.
Back in the 1990s, German games were famous for 3 things: they had good graphics, they were quite realistic and very hard to master. Software Manager is no exception - the graphic side was very nice, the game reality is kept close to what you could have been doing if you were a game developer in that era, and it is hard to get even through the first year without bankrupting your business. German business simulators (because they were more about simulating than actually playing and enjoying yourself) had also one gimmick used in almost every title - you compete with 3 competitors for the domination on the market (or more realistically for survival).
In Software Manager we enter the game development market competing with 3 other guys that came up with exactly the same idea as we, we hire the first employee, who will have to take care of all aspects of the projects (programming, music and graphics) while we will be handling the production and distribution side of the business. Of course the first steps are tough, the first projects are useless, and we have to keep in mind that the competition is about to take over the market. The paper magazines are the source of the information about potential employees, the news and ranking of recently published games and of course the source of income for use through advertising.
Typical German games of 1990s simulating painstakingly realistic picture of the game market in that era - you have to struggle with each detail of the production while the reviewers will give you poor rating anyway.
