There is a brand new world waiting for you out there, on the other side of the ocean.
German games, and especially the management / economy ones, were always a bit different from the rest - often harder to play, more demanding, leaving very little space for mistakes. And Christoph Kolumbus (aka Exploration) is no exception in that aspect - at the first glance you would think this is just a clone of Colonization / Civilization with perhaps some additional functions, but actually the philosophy behind it was a bit different.
Christoph Kolumbus is a strategy / economy game set in 15th century, you take the role of an explorer in charge of the expedition to the New World. So far, so Colonization-like, but the scale is a bit different, the functions and challenges you will have to face a bit more basic and more grounded. Not only choosing the right spot to start the colony is a bit more complicated, but also you will spend more time trying to keep your colonists alive than in Colonization.
You have to keep good relationship with the local tribes (unless you are prepared to fight them all along), you have to take care of the business side of the expedition and produce something you can sell, you have to keep good relations with other countries to avoid an open conflict.
Like most of the German games of the genre, Christoph Kolumbus is a quite good game with stunning graphics for the era, although might be too grounded and challenging for the wider audience. Nevertheless, it is a well done game.
