The POWs will be shot by firing squad, you have to save them! Why are you still reading this? I’ve told you there are POWs waiting to be rescued - go, go, go!
But before you go... Ah, too late. Forgot to tell him he needs to gear up, but... I guess the combat knife is enough to challenge head-on a company of enemy elite troops. Right? He’ll be fine.
The Green Beret was an almost typical platform / arcade game, in which you have to cross levels full of enemies to reach the next level. Then you had to cross that new level in order to reach the next one. This new one was different, because... No, it really wasn’t, it was still about getting to the next one and so on. But there was one important difference in comparison to other games of the genre - you started with just a combat knife and hope in your heart.
This not only made the game challenging, but with time also frustrating. Of course, you could just pick up the weapons your enemies can drop, right? Well, yes, you can, but it would be too easy and no Green Beret likes it when it’s easy, so only certain enemies drop weapons that you can use. But once they do, it gets easier. Slightly easier, to be exact. Oh yeah, and the weapons you can pick up have limited uses, f.e. flamethrower have three "squirts" or "splooshes" (I hope that is the correct term and not something sexual), RPG has four "flying knobs" (I’m not sure that this is the technical term for them) or grenades always come... Well, never mind, let’s move on.
There were several kinds of enemies, not just the ones running up and down the platform, plus each of the stages of the game ends up with "boss fight" against a soldier or soldiers with special weapons or equipment.
Overall it was an unforgiving arcade game that was guaranteed to wore you out. Still, it was very popular and spawned plenty of ports to other platforms (some with much better graphics), including a mobile phones port from 2006 and XBOX version from 2007. If you love platform / arcade games or just don’t like to be happy, you should give it a try.
