A platform game with a mean streak hidden beneath, because it was partly a puzzle game. And when I say puzzle game, I mean a f... Well, anyway.
What can be said about Zorro? It is a platform game, it is a puzzle game, and it has one of the most haunting melodies you will ever hear in a video game. What was so haunting about it? It was 19 notes of rather monotonous "melody" going on in a loop. Yes, it does have its charm, it does set the atmosphere of the game, but since the game was a platform and puzzle game, it meant you will hear that tune for looong, looong time, over and over and over again. Let me explain it this way - the last time I played this game was over 30 years ago, and I still remember the melody and how it moved from background sounds to be an annoying reminder of how bad I was in the game and finally to the gut-wrenching torture.
The game itself was an interesting idea - as Zorro you try to infiltrate the locations filled with soldiers (that you can kill) and stealthy you try to progress further. The interesting bit was that you had to find the way to move forward, by solving puzzled. For example, you had to bring a branding iron, drop it on the blacksmith’s hearth, then jump on the bellows, so the branding iron would get red-hot, then use it to brand a bull that is locked in its pen, so he would break the part of the wall blocking the way. And, of course, there was also the arcade element, where you had to precisely jump onto a platform, if you failed, you sometimes had to start from the beginning.
It was kind-of unforgiving game with soundtrack that could be used instead of water-boarding.
