The forces within the former Soviet Union try to resurrect their empire and a unit of American special forces is sent to stop them.
In year 2008 Russia is torn by civil unrest and chaos, the radicals are trying to restore the Soviet Union. By force, of course. But Uncle Sam has a remedy for such ideas, it is called the Ghost unit - a platoon of special forces, who can be dropped anywhere in the world and defeat any sort of enemies. Yes, it is a work of fiction, from well-known writer Tom Clancy.
We start in Georgia (no, not the state, the country), where we have to capture the leader of pro-Russian forces and escort him to the extraction zone. Between us and the target there are quite few enemies and quite few tricky open spaces we have to cross. But not to worry, you can count on the support of other Ghosts (no, not the paranormal ones, the armed ones). And here is where the game really starts - the preparation phase.
Before each mission you can choose which of the Ghosts you will take on the mission and you will split them. You can select up to 6 soldiers and split them in up to 3 units (with maximum of 3 soldiers in one unit). You can pick from riflemen, snipers, support and demolition soldiers, each with different equipment, so there are a lot of combinations in which you can build your platoon. After each mission, you can distribute experience points among those of the Ghosts who survived, this will increase their skills.
Once your platoon is on the ground, Ghost Recon will put to the test how you used your preparation phase, because you can take control any of the soldiers involved and give orders to the other units (move there, watch this direction, etc), and everything is happening in real time. You have to find safe spot, keep your soldiers safe and reach the targets with minimal loses, because every fallen soldier will be replaced by a rookie with basic set of skills.
Ghost Recon was one of the best early FPS games - challenging, gave you a lot of options to choose from, you could reach the targets in any way you wanted, as long as you got the job done. The missions were well-designed, the planning and predicting the enemy moves were also critical, so you could spend long hours replaying the same missions in order to find a different way to finish it.
