A shoot ’em up game with a twist - you actually need to think from time to time and choose when and how approach the enemies.
Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf (usually abbreviated to just Desert Strike) was a game developed by Electronic Arts in the times before they turned evil. The game was on surface just another shoot ’em up game themed around the Gulf War, in which you are in charge of an AH-64 Apache helicopter and operate over a fictitious country in the Middle East.
The isometric view and the slower pace of the action were not the only differences, Desert Strike required also a bit of planning and a bit of knowledge to success in the missions. First of all, you needed to know how and when to approach the enemy and when to avoid the fight until the conditions will be more favourable. Even though you are flying one of the best helicopters in history, it does not mean it is invincible, the enemy does have plenty of anti-aircraft weapons, radars and also helicopters, so in your raids you have to take under consideration different kinds of threats.
The missions varied, although they were often inspired by Gulf War, so you had to rescue downed pilots, POWs, search for Scud missiles and chemical weapons (that Americans are still trying to find in Iraq to this day), and in each step of the way you had to scout the area before moving in, otherwise you will learn the hard way that your enemies are not just helpless targets.
For a shoot ’em up title, Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf was a surprisingly complex and challenging game that allowed you to choose the way you want to approach your mission goal.
