Dark Seed retro game

point and click gamesadventure games

You buy a house and, oh no, it is filled with alien ancient creatures from another dimension. I know, I know, every bloody week the same story...

Dark Seed is a point and click adventure game with elements of horror and science fiction. As Mike Dawson, the main character, you wake up in a house you just bought. The nightmare you had about your skull being impregnated by some sort of alien seed is something that would wake up anyone. But since the nightmare is over, you look around the house and find the hints that the previous owner had very similar nightmare and piercing headaches that you just experienced. Funnily enough, it was not mentioned in the ad that you responded to, so you set out to find out more about the cause of those nightmares. And, oh boy, is that not a good idea.

Dark Seed was, up to a point, a typical point and click adventures, where you had to solve the puzzles to progress (and I mean the 1990s sort of puzzles that might give you a piercing headaches themselves). But then, the game changes into something else - once you cross into a different dimension that you will find on the other side of a mirror, you find yourself in the world of nightmares. Literally, since that part of the game was based on designs of H. R. Giger (famous for creating alien... from the movie Alien... about aliens... in space).

That mechanic of creating a world that is a reflection of your own, although slightly more scary, and you have to work between them to reach the ultimate goal, was very original and created a unique gameplay. Cyberdreams, the designers of Dark Seed, did not patent this idea, unlike other people I’m not gonna mention (Bloober Team and their pathetic Medium, there I named it). But the atmosphere and the unique style of the H. R. Giger creation was still linked to a typical point and click adventure game, which lead to typical problems of the genre (something like: work out why you need a goat to find a balloon hidden beneath the church floor).

Dark Seed was dark, was atmospheric, the graphic side was good enough (in our dimension) and memorable (on the other side of the mirror). The adventure itself, not so much, but still, it is a game worth checking out.

The budget
Rumour has it that most of the USD 600,000 of the Dark Seed budget went into the pockets of H. R. Giger, for the rights to use his works in the game.
