Game that is hard to describe in just few words - adaptation of a police TV show from 1980s, with a nice twist.
First of all, even though this is an adaptation of a TV show, you do not need to actually know much about the show to play it (even though everything is made to to remind you of original Hill Street Blues). Second of all, knowing the TV show inside-out will not help you much either. So what exactly is that? It’s hard to describe actually what genre would this fit into, action-adventure I guess.
Basically, you are in charge of the police station, you have a map of the part of the city you are responsible for, you have few officers available (based on the characters from the TV show), you set patrolling sectors, etc. And then a crime is committed somewhere, you get the report and get into action. Or to be precise you leave the station and in a sort-of top-down view, take charge of an officer. First you get the police car from the parking, you drive to the area where the crime took place and start your investigation. Usually you have a description of the suspect, so you have to drive around (or walk around if you are not in a hurry) and look for the suspect (literally check the pedestrians and compare them with the description).
It might sound a bit boring, mostly because it can be boring, but that is more or less police work is all about, you get 5 minutes of action out of 7 days of boredom. The cases that end up on your desk vary, from bag-snatching to vandalism and even robberies. And the gameplay is doing the "footwork", sometimed literally, because you need to catch the suspect, who decided to run away. You have several officers available and you can (or in some cases must) control more than one at the same time, which could be a burden.
Hill Street Blues was what it said on the tin, an adaptation of a police show, so you have to deal with what the characters in the show had to deal every day. It might not be always exciting, it might not be glamorous, but it was fairly good game that kept the atmosphere of the original.
