4X gamesgrand strategystrategy games
Strategy game that brought a 4X games to a brand new level - as a leader of a tribe you build a civilization.
Sid Meier is responsible for quite few titles that reformed or brought genres to a new level of complexity and Civilization is one of the shining examples of it. Based on experiences of board games MicroProse created a game that defined a modern 4X strategy games (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate) - as a leader of one of the tribes you start from scratch building a future civilization.
Of course you are not alone in this world and sooner or later you will have to deal with other tribes, who also try to create their own empires. Apart from that you will have to explore the world and find places suitable to establish cities, provide enough food for your citizens to survive, but also create environment that would support the intellectual progress, because knowledge is power.
On completely different level, you have to take care of the military forces to defend your land, improve cities so they could provide you with more people, improve the infrastructure so the trade could flourish, send your emissaries to other countries to keep the peace between the nations... at least until it will be time to take over their land.
The game starts on the level of small tribes trying to survive 4000 years BC and can go all the way to year 2100 AD, when you can have the space flight technology and dominate the whole map. The maps were generated randomly, which meant that each time you will be playing in different circumstances, the starting location of the tribes was random, the only thing that remains the same is that at some point, in order to progress further you will most likely have to exterminate the competitors.
It is hard to list all of the things that were revolutionary in Civilization (like technology trees) and in how many ways this title have influenced hundreds of other titles. Even back in 1990s it was a very complexed game that did not lost much of its originality and quality.
