Back, in the times when mommy and daddy of Rainbow Six Siege haven’t even met yet, there were games like Sabre Team to give you a taste of what special operations look like.
What exactly Sabre Team have in common with Rainbow Six Siege? Not much really. I mean they both present the operations of special forces, where one side are the baddies, but apart from that they belong to completely different genres. While Rainbow Six Siege is all about action, Sabre Team was more about planning and tactics of the operation. As a commander of a special unit, you are put in charge of dealing with the hostage situation and, unlike in the movies, the time for negotiations is already over.
Out of the set of available soldiers, you choose your assault squad and attack an embassy or the prisoners of war camp in the jungle. Even though they sound like similar scenario, each requires different set of skills and different equipment. The gameplay is a turn-based tactical duel with the baddies, in a way similar to what you can remember from UFO: Enemy Unknown. There are actions points, there are time limits, there are details of what your soldiers can do, f.e. you need to manually order reload of the weapons, if you forget to do that... let’s just say you are unlikely to make this mistake again. Unless you enjoy helplessness and watching your guys die one by one.
The game was hardly a piece of art - the graphics were good, sounds were not so great, but the number of ways you could approach your missions was impressive. There were dozens of types of equipment you can take with you, choose one of the several soldiers available, create your own plan how to proceed further. Plus the fog of war built an interesting atmosphere, where each step you have to consider might be your last.
