Classic strategy game with action elements - on surface a very simple looking game, but once you take a look at the details it is a great piece of software from 1988.
Set in futuristic world the game simulates a duel between two automated carriers that try to take over the archipelago of 64 islands. The islands are small pieces of land that together create a network that allows to transfer resources between them and can be switched to one of the types of islands - some of them can produce fuel, others can be used to manufacture weapons and some can be turned into defence bastions. While we are starting invading the islands the enemy in identical carrier does the same on the other side of archipelago.
The carrier is heavily armed - from big laser cannon on the top, through surface-to-surface rockets, mines to the main part of the equipments: Mantas and Walruses. Mantas are the VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) flying vehicles that you can equip in laser gun, air-to-air rockets, bombs or other equipment and use to recon the islands or attack targets. Walruses are amphibious tracked vehicles that are vital to taking over the islands - they are the ones that have to be deployed in order to either destroy enemy command center or implement virus to take over the control of the existing island installations.
While all of it seems straight forward Carrier Command was a great game, brilliantly developed with plenty of tiny details you have to take care off, f.e. you have to resupply the fuel of the carrier, so each time you travel between islands you have to set the speed you want to travel - while you want to take over islands as fast as you can you have to take under consideration that you will use more fuel that way. While planning moves you have to follow the network connections between the islands, otherwise you won’t be able to make use of the island resource. At the same time you have to plan the production of the equipment you will need to replace the one you are gonna lose during the campaign, set the priorities for repairs in damaged parts of the carrier, resupply equipment for Mantas and Walruses and, at the end, face the other carrier.
A great strategy game with action elements that gave so many options how to approach the mission of our carrier that still is a great piece of software that can be played for long, long hours.

1994
Amiga version of classic 1977 arcade game - sink the enemy submarines using depth charges.

1978
Shooter game that conquered the arcade machines market in late 1970s and remained an icon not only for the genre, but video games as a whole.

1990
Five years after Silent Service MicroProse published second version of the game with improved graphics, but basically identical with the original. As they say you can’t improve the perfection...

1996
Duke Nukem 3D was in many ways not very good game - it lacked story as such, the enemy AI was struggling, the levels were sometimes too repetitive, but at the same time it was one of the most enjoyable FPS games ever.
