A bit of a strategy, a bit of simulation and a bit of a tactical shooter. Confused yet? Good.
Team Yankee was based on a book describing what World War III could look like from the perspective of an American company, trying to stop the offensive of the Soviet Union into the Western Europe. As a commander of that company we have 4 platoons of armoured vehicles to our disposal, they could be M1 Abrams tanks, M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles and M113 carriers. And I said "could be" because we start with pre-selected set of vehicles, but once we lose some of them, we can replace them with any type we want (and can afford).
While it would be obvious to choose the tanks and have a great balance between armour and firepower, Bradleys and M113s have their own strong points, which are TOW missiles, which take longer to reload, but are capable of dealing with the enemy from greater distances and could blow up a tank in one shot.
We start the scenario when Soviet Union begins the invasion, so of course, we have to defend out position, prepare the artillery barrage to increase our firepower, move our units to best possible positions to be prepared for what will hit us, but with time we have to take over the initiative and fight back. And because of that Team Yankee was so effective and entertaining game - even though on first glance we just keep doing the same thing over and over again, each scenario is slightly different and each time the enemy could act in a slightly different way.
But taking care of four different units at once is quite complicated - we can either use the split-screen option and have preview of what is going on in every platoon at once, or we could switch to a single unit (in a simulation-like manner). To help us, we have few modes, like forward view from the vehicle (platoon leader), binoculars view, infrared view, map, unit status, etc. All of it gives a good idea of what is going on, but still we need to be everywhere at the same time. Out vehicles will not shoot the enemies on their own will, we need to press the button for this to happen.
It is hard to describe Team Yankee - it is not really a simulator (although it kind-of is), it is not really a strategy (perhaps more of a tactical game), it kinf-of is a shooter, although it is more complicated than that. All I can say is that it was a great game that could keep the player occupied for long, long hours without feeling that it is repetitive or boring.
