Amiga strategy game created in AMOS Basic, a tool usually associated with platform games and simple sprite graphics, but Colonial Conquest 2 was a glorious exception to that reputation of AMOS.
Colonial Conquest 2, although shared title with 8-bit computers game Colonial Conquest, the two have very little in common. Except the basic concept of course. Colonial Conquest was early grand strategy game, in which users were put in charge of the Earth empires trying to snatch the areas from each other and, as the ultimate goal, annihilate each other. Colonial Conquest 2 was project of Swiss programmer Christian Mumenthaler, who changed the setting completely - instead of trying to conquer the world he built his game as sort-of sequel.
Now, as leader of Earth, you start the expansion to other planets by building spaceships, establishing colonies on other solar systems, take care of their growth and defensive resources. And now that I mentioned the defensive aspect, is where the Colonial Conquest 2 brilliant bit begins. You start the exploration of available planet systems, but at the same time some other power does exactly the same in some other part of the game universe. Aliens start their explorations and they are... let’s just say they are far more prepared for it than you are at the beginning of the game. So, while you have to explore and establish colonies, you are under constant pressure that sooner or later you will have to face the enemy.
And that is the brilliant part of Colonial Conquest 2 - you have to find a way to explore, extend your production capabilities, but at the same time build fleet that could match that of the alien invaders, which is a hard thing to do. Random events, Civilization-like management of the planets and randomly generated universe, each time you start the game - all of those elements made Colonial Conquest 2 one of the criminally overlooked gems of Commodore Amiga.

Link to 1985 Colonial Conquest
Although game shares title with 1985 game Colonial Conquest published by Ubisoft, Colonial Conquest 2 is (at best) inspired by 1985 game and not any sort of sequel. Christian Mumenthaler published his Colonial Conquest game in 1993, and Colonial Conquest 2 is expanded version of that game that included input from testers and few more options.
