Tigers in the Snow retro game

strategy games

Early strategy game simulating one of the major battles of 1944, famous Battle of the Bulge, the last offensive of Wehrmacht in World War 2.

Battle of the Bulge was one of the most unusual battles of World War 2 - while Allied forces were convinced that Germans are about to fall the Hitler’s generals were actually preparing an offensive, their last one in World War 2, but they didn’t knew that in December 1945. The aim was to reach the port of Antwerp used by Allies to transport invasion forces and thus slow down the progress of American and British forces that were closing down on German borders. Hitler gathered all the best forces that he had left, including King Tiger tanks that were suppose to be the element that would push the balance of the battle in Nazi favour. They chose the place they used before in 1940, the Ardennes on Belgian and French borders, to attack the weakest part of Allied defences. The German offensive was complete surprise and during early days Americans could not prepare the defence lines.

And at that point we step up in Tigers in the Snow - German offensive have reached the Ardennes and we have to rush every available unit to slow them down until reinforcements could be transferred from another parts of the front. The game had been clearly influenced by board games, so we operate on the map divided into hexes, but unfortunately with very limited informations about the areas and the units the gameplay is rather hard to master. The game engine included the influence of supplies and weather, but with simplified graphics, not very impressive interface and lack of knowledge when and where the reinforcements will arrive it is hard to actually prepare the defence. On the plus side there are options available to control both sided of the battle and set the balance of power between them, so we can play different scenarios.
