Strategy game simulating the tense atmosphere in geopolitics during Cold War - choose a side and try to bully the opponent to give up his sphere of influence.
During the Cold War, the situation in the world was constantly tense - while the USA and USSR were not in an open conflict, they were trying to build a network of satellite countries around them to have the means to undermine the position of the other side. They were fighting the war by proxy - giving the military and financial aid to sides of the local conflicts and thus change the political situation in the world. In Balance of Power we are the leader of one of those countries and through a wide range of tools we are trying to improve our influence in the world and at the same time block the enemy from gaining influences.
The game concentrates on the military side of the conflict - our main weapons are money and soldiers, that we can send to a specific country to chance the local balance. But apart from that, we can analyse different aspects of each of those countries to determine if supporting local government or the insurgents would be in our interest. Of course our opponent will do the same, so sooner or later it will lead to, at least diplomatic, confrontation. But during Cold War such confrontation could be prelude to global nuclear conflict, so we have to take under consideration that billions of lives are in stake.
The game can hardly be called good-looking - the map and text messages create the interface we are using - but when you get pass that element of the game, you can discover how complicated Balance of Power really is.
