Football management game with a twist. Not a huge one, but quite interesting nevertheless.
The football manager games of the 1990s were basically very similar - the match was very simple, the main menu was the only part that had some decent graphics, and the rest of it was almost identical. But not here, and not for a reason you would guess.
Super League Manager simulates a British-like fictional division, in which you are put in charge of Folkford United, just an average club. You have some players, you have some opponent teams, and you have the tea lady. Wait, what? Ah, yes, the twist in Super League Manager is not what you would expect - they did not choose to go for the glamour and sophistication, their game makes everything far more grounded than you would expect. Yes, you have a tea lady, who (if you won’t drink your tea will complain), you have a pot flower, which needs to be watered from time to time, you get phonecalls from other managers and journalists. You get the most realistic experience of being in charge of a small club you can get in computer games.
The rest of the game is fairly typical, although there are some surprising details, f.e. if a match of your team will be selected as Match of the Week you can take the joystick and play that match yourself, which is a nice touch. The depth of the simulation wasn’t by any measure ground-breaking, but nice graphics and unique approach to the genre made Super League Manager stand out in the crowd.
It is not the best football management game ever, it is not the most realistic one, but it is memorable in its unique way.
