After publishing one of the best arcade soccer games, Sensible Soccer, the creators published the title that was an extension of the game - this time we were able to run the club and play the matches.
Sensible Soccer was one of the best early soccer games, offering simple graphics (similar to Kick Off games), but the playability made the title one of the best on the market. Apart from playing the matches, we could take part in the competitions, but only for a single season. Sensible World of Soccer was an extension of that concept and introduced the very basic club management options. In SWOS we were able to choose any club from several countries available and run it like in the soccer manager game - season after season. The available management options were very limited - only transfers and youth / reserve players, while still we could play the matches like in the regular Sensible Soccer.
That combination proved to be quite successful, and the game quickly gained a wide range of fans since the playability of Sensible Soccer was merged with the options of a management game. Of course the game lacked the depth of a good management game, f.e. players were described by two parameters, their market value and the three-letter code that signalled what are the strong points of that player, but in practice the market value was the most important. Also, if you chose only to be a coach and not player-coach, the option to watch the matches of your team was in practice a necessity - there was option to simply jump straight to the result, but unfortunately the result of such game was almost completely random and even if your opponent was much inferior the game could have ended in a draw or even your defeat.
Overall a great game that, like previously Player Manager, mixed the option to play the soccer matches and at the same time be the manager, who takes care of the transfers.
