soccer manager gamesboard games
One of many UK football manager games based on same concept - start your team at the bottom division and fight your way up to the top. But Zeppelin Games managed to put few twists into this overused scenario...
Take a team from bottom division and build its might while you try to reach the top - one of the most overused scenarios in football manager games. Premier Division is not an exception - we take over team from 3rd Division, but to reach Premier division is not equal to reaching the top. Above Premier Division there is a international division, in which we can compete against teams from different European countries. That is just small detail, that in reality changes a lot.
The player skills are simplified, the managerial options are simplified, the match engine is far too simple (no player ratings, no player history, no match report), but there are elements that make this game surprisingly addictive despite its obvious flaws. One of those elements is transfer system - we do not have a typical transfer list that would allow us to hire whoever we want, instead each week we have up to 2 purchase offers, but for randomly chosen players, which sometimes could be frustrating, but at the same time build another layer of the game. Sometimes the offered player will be too expensive, sometimes they will play on position that we do not need any more players, sometimes we buy an average player and week later there is a better player available, but we can’t afford him any more.
The second important element is the use of random events - from promising talent just signing contract with club, IRS busting us on tax evasion, fans destroying seats on the stadium to one of our player’s career suddenly ended due to health problems. Just like in classic Anstoss (On the Ball) they change the whole atmosphere in the game and break the monotony of playing match after match. The last unusual element in Premier Division is... very unusual - a board game. Yes, if you are tired of playing the football manager game you can switch to the board game (similar to Monopoly) with football themes and play it instead.
Premier Division is another very simple soccer manager game, but through well developed details it is worth a look or two.
