Pitfall!
1982 games Atari gamesCommodore 64 games

Platform game that had an extra topical flavour - as an adventurer you jump and run through the jungle environment and face the dangers the jungle has to offer.
As Pitfall Harry, a fortune hunter and an explorer, you face all the dangers that jungle has to offer - from crocodiles, scorpions, snakes, quicksand, rolling logs and plenty of holes you can fall into. The goal is to collect as many points as possible within a time limit of 20 minutes. The points are assigned for finding treasures, like money bags or diamond rings.
Pitfall! was slightly different from most of the platform games of the era: while usually they were involving many platforms within each screen, linked by stairs or here ladders, here it seems you are travelling mostly on flat surfaces. The game was challenging for different reasons - the screens were more topical and jungle-themed, so you had to avoid wild animals, pits and holes you can fall into, rolling logs, travel using lianas, so it was more of a combination of different elements rather than a one dominating way the game was challenging you.
The travel took player deeper under the ground, where the challenges were a bit steeper, but overall the game was surprisingly easy to get attached to and sometimes depressingly hard to master.
