Classic racing game with a twist. And some spins. Set in 1970s or 1980s when cars were so much more fun than today and with a criminals in the background.
Inspired by the 1978 film The Driver, the game is set in 1970s or early 1980s in United States, where the player assumes the role of an undercover policeman, who tries to infiltrate the gang responsible for a long list of criminal activities. Of course, to be accepted into the gang, you have to prove your skills in driving the car in a tight environment of an underground car park. After that you are being given different tasks that will put your skills to the test, especially in avoiding police cars.
While the missions were often challenging (to say the least), this was not the best part of the game - the story mode was nice, it took you from Miami to San Francisco and then New York City, where in a variety of cars you were given tasks, sometimes with a very strict limitations. But, to be fair, plenty of car games have similar format. What made Driver so special were the cars or rather their physics - they were based around 1970s cars with very soft suspensions, which meant that even slight correction at high speed made the car make a slight wobble. But cornering and using handbrake was turning the car in a ton of fun - if was a sheer pleasure to drive around at high speed and cutting corners, swish through traffic and jump on the bridges or hills.
But this still was not the best part of the game, at least for me, the game also had a set of challenges you could play outside of the story mode - from driving on a on-off-road track to just escape police cars that will try to smash into your car the moment the game starts. The story mode was nice, but the challenges were sometimes epic and because of them, this is the car game I had most fun ever.
