In 1916 the life expectancy for new pilots joining front line squadrons was very short. Why? Try it for yourself and find out...
Cinemaware was always making games that were stunning - if you take a hard look at them they were usually very simple, made of different parts patched together, but once you got attached it was hard to stop playing them. Wings was one of their last productions, presenting the life of a young pilot joining the front line squadron during World War 1 in Europe.
Somewhere in France we start with simple patrol missions that may lead to an encounter with enemy fighters, but hunting enemy planes was just part of our missions. Since our additional task was to keep the unit diary we see the events through the pages of the book describing what the mood was among pilots, what was happening lately, what were their looks at the war. The missions we are given between them are from a wide range of activities - dogfights with enemy fighters, intercepting enemy bombers to save our airbase, attack enemy convoys, photo their strategic targets, bomb enemy installations or ship, shot down enemy balloons, etc. But each mission is a risk of being killed, which sooner or later will happen - the life expectancy in 1916 for new pilots were only few weeks. In case you are killed during the mission you can continue the game with new pilot from the same spot in the story of 56th squadron.
One of the best games ever made - simple, entertaining, with various elements put together to create a comprehensive look at the lives of World War 1 pilots. After each week you will see people from you squadron being removed from the roster and being replaced by new ones and, sooner or later, you will be among them.
