GoldenEye 007
1997 computer games Nintendo games

Classic first-person shooter that was a surprisingly good adaptation of James Bond movie.
At first, GoldenEye 007 was planned to be a rail shooter, where player has a very limited range movement options and the character is just transported between locations where the action takes place. And if that concept would be brought to life I don’t think GoldenEye 007 would be remembered to this day. The whole success of this game was put on two main pillars: home consoles can handle 3D shooters and giving users freedom to move around is better than not.
Based on the James Bond movie, GoldenEye 007 was putting player in the role of the main character, James... whatever his name was. Starting in a base somewhere in Russia, the plot centres around an MI5 agent being killed before your eyes and then chasing baddies as they plan to take over the world. Or something.
The graphic side was, for obvious reasons, not the strongest point of the game - simple vector objects, covered in textures were painfully simple, but at the same time the simplicity of the surrounding let the consoles keep the dynamic action running smooth. After all, not many people play FPS games to discuss the decor of the rooms, right? Ok, I was just asking, don’t have to be snappy with me.
The main plot was involving, the locations were well built and there were places with hidden passes - everything you need for a good FPS. But GoldenEye 007 had one more ace up its sleeve - multiplayer. The locations were built well enough for the main plot, so they were good enough for deathmatches on a split screen.
GoldenEye 007 is an icon of an era, a game that was a bit too simple even on the premiere and still remains one of the best games of the genre, which is impressive.
