Build your own career as a soccer player and make it to the top to become the player of the year.
At the beginning you choose in what division you want to start your career (it is wiser to start low) and in what team - 4 English divisions are available plus Super League consisting of top clubs from whole Europe. As a forward your single aim is to score as many goals as possible, but to have the chance to score them you need goal cards. They can be bought each week, but higher division the higher the price will be (thus it is wiser to start low).
For each game you are being given the number of goal situation you will have in this particular game - between 1 and 3 - before you can decide if you want to spend a goal card for this particular match. There are only two kinds of goal situations - penalty kicks and free ball situation. In the free ball situation two defenders are closing on you from both sides of the screen and you can move the ball before taking a kick. Unfortunately the balance between penalty kicks and free ball situations is hardly realistic, I would say 50-50, which means you have to master both.
Outside of the matches there are random events that can be a strike of luck or a disastrous news, also you can be given extra chance to make some money or lose some money. You can also buy transfer cards (rather pricey) that will bring a scout to check your skills, but you need to have some skills before he will be interested in making the transfer. Another side "mission" is the chance to play for your national team - at the beginning you choose your nationality so you could be considered to play for that country and from time to time you are being checked by the national coach if you are good enough to play for them.
Footballer of the Year is one of those very simple games, that when you take a good look at them turns out to be more complicated than they seem.

After success of Kick Off Dino Dini came up with extension to the game that completely changed the character of the game - as player-manager we not only play in the matches, but also take care of the whole team.

1981
Classic platform game, one of the earliest titles of the genre, which introduced a character of Mario.

1977
Advanced chess simulator with a high quality AI opponent. Not really, but it sounds better than the real thing - you bounce a guy to blow up the balloons.

1993
One of the Amiga games inspired by classic 8-bit Formula One manager games that offered basic management options, but very little more.
