Early 3D graphics plus interesting concept made this game one of the best in the genre - shooter with elements of simulation set during World War 2 aboard the British destroyer.
In 1989 French company Futura Games published Sherman M4, a simple 3D graphics tank simulator that on one hand was impressive since gave us the chance to see the battlefield through eyes of the tank crew, but at the same time had a lot of flaws in the gameplay. Year later they came up with game that was based on same principles, slightly improved graphics and same technology and this time the game was a hit. Advanced Destroyer Simulator gave us the chance to, again, take part in World War 2 on Allied side, but this time instead of facing enemy on land we took control of British destroyer dealing with various missions in the Mediterranean Sea, English Channel and Norwegian fjords. Armed with guns, torpedoes and depth charges, equipped with radar and sonar we were able to deal with most of the enemy power. The missions had different character - from recon to intercepting enemy forces or escorting Allied ships, but since we had to start each mission in the port and return to base at the end of the mission every damage our ship have suffered was a problem.
Early 3D graphics game with interesting concept and offering a lot of different activities during gameplay made Advanced Destroyer Simulator one of the best productions of the genre. Of course since surface warships simulators were rare the game did not have much competition in 1990s, but still it is example of early 3D games that with limited hardware power were able to offer a good entertainment, especially comparing to Sherman M4 just one year earlier.
