simulator gamessubmarine simulators
Simulator of a 688 class attack submarine or its Soviet counterpart, Alfa class.
688 Attack Sub was built in a way similar to other naval simulators of the era - the submarine is split into separate stations that you can switch between (f.e. communications, sensors, weapons) and each of the stations contains on a single screen all the options that this particular part of the submarine have to offer. When it comes to graphic side it isn’t great - it is good enough, but can hardly be called realistic (especially if you use a periscope), but at the same time the simulation contains a lot of realistic elements, like thermal layers, cavitation, limitations of the weapons and sensors. Even the simple analysis of the sound profile of the target is done in an interesting way that builds the atmosphere of the game.
There are several scenarios available - from simple patrol that might turn into something more, to almost open conflict with the other side of the Cold War. The variety of missions is perhaps not great, but at the same time each requires a bit of different approach to the goals you will be approaching - sometimes all you have to do is shadow an enemy submarine, in others you have to identify a surface target and attack it or sneak through the enemy area.
It is not a game for people lacking patience, just like other naval warfare games it mixes elements of simulation and strategy, where you have to plan your steps and be prepared for them to fail completely. It is a nice touch that you can play as the captain on the other side of the conflict and see how it looks from a different perspective, and overall it is quite decent sub simulator.
