The year was 1989, when Infogrames decided to shock the world - they took hostages and locked them in an embassy. Or made a game about such event, it was one of the two.
Some baddies take over an embassy, they are armed, dangerous, they know how to work spotlights and also they took some hostages. Who you gonna call? No, not the Ghostbusters, for this job you need professionals! So... bring in the gamers with their sheer lack of experience in this matter. Seems legit.
Hostages (also known under few other names, like Hostage, Hostage: Rescue Mission, Hostages: The Embassy Mission, Operation Jupiter and Rescue: The Embassy Mission) was an arcade game with a twist - the gameplay is split into different phases, each required slightly different set of skills and slightly different nature. You take control of the police sniper, trying to reduce the number of assailants, you rush the SWAT team members to reach their destinations and surround the embassy and then storm the place and rescue the hostages.
Whatever the name you know this game as, there are very few people that could say something bad about it. It was not the most complicated game in history, but the is was so much fun to play that it did not really matter. There are hostages, there are baddies, you have guns - who needs an in-depth story behind it? It was simple, it was fun, it was a memorable piece of gaming history.
