Classic arcade game, in which we drive a getaway car through a maze of the city streets while three police cars are patrolling the area. Our goal is to gather as much stash as we can without getting caught. Our main targets are white bank vans - when we drive into them, we get their whole content, which could be quite a lot. But when we do it, police cars are informed about our position and once they pick up our position it is hard to shake them off.
The only safe place in the whole city is our hideout (marked with letter H), where we leave the loot, and while we are in the hideout the police cars are not able to stop us nor detect us, so after a while they give up and return to patrolling. Aside from the vans, we also can collect smaller loots (dollar signs or jewellery) which does not give away our position, but they are significantly less valuable. But while we are gathering our wealth we also have to remember about the basics, like... refuelling the car for example. Yes, from time to time, even during the chase, we have to take under consideration if we have enough fuel to reach the hideout.
When our stash is raising so is the difficulty level and with time we begin to stumble upon the red lights and road blocks that are also giving away our position. Of course there are also dead-end streets that we have to learn to avoid, not to mention how to deal with the police cars once they are on our track.
Getaway! is a pleasant little arcade game that can be fun for a long time once you get a hand of the rules. Author, Mark Reid, developed the game himself and distributed it through Atari Program Exchange company that allowed all the programmers access to distribution, even non-professional. According to Reid, Atari had big plans linked to the title, but the market crash of 1983 put those plans to the ground.
