Detective: A Text Adventure Game

adventure gamestext adventures
A short text adventure that is a parody of detective stories and text adventures.
Detective: A Text Adventure Game (sometimes called just Detective) was a short, single player text adventure game, in which you are called to the chief’s office. It turns out that the mayor of the city is dead, he murdered and the chief wants you to quickly solve the mystery before FBI gets involved or the press will get publish the news.
The game was based on the Adventure Game Toolkit, an engine for text adventure titles, which gave some freedom to choose what your character will be doing. Detective is a short game (some contemporary reviews attributed that it can be finished in as little as 30 moves), but it was not designed as a serious contender for other titles and rather as a parody. There are some elements (like instant death rooms) that are placed there just to trick the player.
According to Moby Games, Detective has fifty six locations to visit and the highest possible score is 355 points.
