One on One was one of the first games that introduced the licensed characters based on real players, NBA players Julius Erving and Larry Bird were both paid USD 25,000 for the rights to their names and image be used in a computer game. The game itself was rather simple idea - half of the court used in a one-on-one duel between Bird and Irving in which player could control one of them, in option for 2 players it was player vs player. Rest of the game was simple duel, but creators managed to introduce some of the basketball rules, like travelling, hacking, the rule that after rebound the player that took over the ball must leave the court before shooting, etc.
The most famous addition was of course the shattering of backboard of the basket, which prompted visit from janitor and his complaining. It was a silly idea that made this game memorable. Apart from that a straight one-on-one basket duel that could have been set up (opponent skills, the game is played to the set score or with time limit). A brilliant example that simple ideas could be a great fun!
